project and website archive of sound related images created in parallel to an exhibition presented at la maison rouge, an art center in paris. face b (b-side, in French), consisted of three sections: longplay, single, and remix.

single is a selection of extremely rare records and reproductions of covers that have, for the most part, been lost or disappeared from daniela franco’s collection: a soundtrack by juan garcía esquivel and ulises carrión, commented by his friend, artist martha hellion; an obscure collaboration between david bowie and william burroughs (reviewed by the wire magazine’s editor anne hilde neset); a very limited release by lou reed and laurie anderson (featuring poet anne carson and the couple’s dog, lolabelle)… and much more.

William S. Burroughs et David Bowie | Fill Your Hand Stranger (1975)
Not many are aware of the intense relationship WSB struck with David Bowie in Berlin in the early 70s. The artistic result of this meeting of minds is Fill Your Hand Stranger , an extremely rare spoken word LP released by John Giorno in 1975. Bowie’s claustrophobic, eroticized whispering is meshed with Burrough’s ominous statements « Stranger/ we are here together. Stranger/ I’m coming for you ». Jethro Tull’s Ian Anderson appears on track three and eight, his flute trills first cascade like mesh curtains over the two pirouetting voices then become more aggressive, prying the voices apart. His stabbing flute cries eventually take over in a shrill scream drowning out Burroughs’s deadpan poetry all together, and by then, Bowie’s breathy suggestions are long exhaled.

« (…) en la música Carrión elabora analíticamente proyectos interdisciplinarios dentro de los géneros operístico, popular como los boleros, tango, mambo, danzón, son cubano y su fascinación por las grandes bandas del dancing, Pérez Prado, Beny Moré, García Esquivel, Sonora Matancera que eran parte de su colección de discos de vinil.
Gustaba de analizar la parte afectiva de la condición humana que de algún modo reflejaba ciertos aspectos de uno mismo. Comparaba el drama de las telenovelas, las óperas, las letras de los boleros y las obras de Shakespeare en base a las capacidades emocionales del lenguaje dentro de la explotación de los siete pecados capitales (…)
Esta edición en disco del proyecto sonoro realizado con Juan García Esquivel en 1982 explora, como Carrión en el lenguaje, los pradigmas de la música de fondo. Hay un curioso paralelismo entre el hecho de que no sea hasta ahora que se considere a García Esquivel como un innovador de la música contemporánea de su tiempo(…) y el que Carrión daba entonces a Lilia Prado la posibilidad de haber sido La Super Star Mexicana de su tiempo (…) todo dentro de las mismas estructuras de lenguaje (chisme, rumor, etc.) planteadas teóricamente por Carrión. »
